Back At It

Experimentation, Illustration, Painting

A little experimenting I did with some gouache paints I purchased recently. I’m actually already having a love/hate feeling at the fact that it’s so quick drying. I mean, it’s great, nobody wants to sit and literally watch paint dry, but sometimes its too quick! Or maybe I’m too slow with it… Having said that, i do love the way you’re able to add texture because the paint is drying.

Final thoughts: More experimentation needed.

Jungle In The Making

Illustration

I was writing the general storyline for a story book last week, when I had a flash of what I’d like one of the illustrations to look like. I’m quite eager to start painting it tonight, but I couldn’t wait to post something so here is the sketch.

If you are subscribed or follow my blog you probably received a post entitled ‘test’ recently. Apologies for this, I was having technical issues and needed to test if they were resolved. Thankfully it’s all sorted now.

If anyone is remotely interested in keeping up with my tweets (nod head), which are mostly random thoughts, then click here. Same goes for my instagram, but I do post some creative stuff on there too!

Tiles

Illustration, Painting

I have an affection for the multi-coloured tiles in my grandparents house. There is no particular pattern they follow. Just randomly placed. Maybe it’s the colours. Maybe it’s the time I’d spent sweeping and mopping them. But it’s probably the ties they hold to my mothers parents, who have both passed on.

So here, they make an appearance in a slightly embellished memory. Sadly the cat did not have a bow tie, nor was the cat grey, or I in a yellow dress or with such manly hands…that is all.

Characters Galore

Illustration, Painting

Here is something I’ve wanted to show for a while now! I couldn’t before as I hadn’t given it to the recipient yet, for fear she would see it on my blog and it would ruin the surprise. But she has it now and I can reveal all.

A little background. This was a gift. I wanted to do something original for a friend and as she likes watching anime/cartoons/animated shows I asked her to make a list. And believe me when I say it was lengthy. I picked a few then drew, painted and framed it. Twice. I was clumsy the first time and broke the original frame (which was smaller) and had to change up the layout COMPLETELY. Hence the somewhat unavoidable patchwork I’ve tried to hide as best I could.

How many of the characters can you name?

Firebirds

Illustration, Painting

I finally got round to painting the birds from my last post! You can’t quite see the gold flecks in the adult bird in the pictures though *sigh*.

My mum made me laugh when she first saw them, she said they looked like fish *face palms*.

Anyhoo, here they are!

Hello again!

It’s exactly a year since my last post *insert disapproving look*.

It has been an interesting year for me. I’ve been working hard, acquiring new skills and making things. I have lots planned for the year ahead and will be sharing it here on my blog.

First up we have a few character sketches I’m working on. They’re for a story idea I’ve been thinking about for the past couple of years. I will repost this once it’s finalised!

Flower Market

Illustration

I found this postcard a while ago and recently rediscovered it.

I had a canvas with a painting I no longer liked so I painted it black.

I thought I’d marry the two together today. This is what it’s starting to look like.

It will probably look quite different when I’m finished…

Stars In Jars

Experimentation, Illustration, Inspiration

I love Jazz music. I often listen to it when I’m in a creative mood, working or just chilling out. This time I was chilling out with my eyes closed and foot tapping when some Melody Gardot came on. A song of hers I like called ‘If The Stars Were Mine’ just filled my mind was images. Images that I wanted to illustrate. I started to do some thumbnails etc. I looked at them and thought ‘Am I being too literal with this?? Does it matter?’

I was and I’m not sure it matters. It probably doesn’t.

So here are a couple of ‘thumbnails I messed around with in photoshop. I hope to use watercolours or acrylics. Maybe both.

Maybe it would just be better in my usual style?
